About Magic Spark

At Magic Spark, we believe in building games that hook and hold players from the very first session. We are a dynamic, forward-thinking game development studio focused on crafting memorable, high-impact interactive experiences. Operating remotely with a strong base in Estonia, our culture thrives on autonomy, creative ownership, and a shared passion for making fun games.

When you join Magic Spark, you step into an environment where your design decisions directly shape our products, our community, and our future on the gaming front page.

About the Role

Design gameplay that hooks and holds. As our Game Designer at Magic Spark, you will define core loops, mechanics, progression paths, and economies—figuring out what makes a game fun and speccing it clearly enough that engineering and art can build it without guessing.

Take designs the whole way. You will pitch ideas, prototype them, tune them, test them hard on real players, and keep iterating live. A design is never finished when it is written down; it is finished when it feels right in players’ hands.

Obsess over feel and clarity. You will craft systems that make sense without a tutorial, rewards that truly land, and a difficulty curve that pulls players forward rather than pushing them away. Getting this right is the core of the job.

Range widely across disciplines. One week you might be balancing an economy, the next you are laying out a level, writing UX flows, or scoping a live event. We value curiosity across systems, levels, and progression over being boxed into a single lane.

Shape the games, not just document them. Bring strong opinions, poke holes in your own designs, and push ideas forward in reviews. Your design insights will carry real weight here—backed always by solid reasoning and playtest data, not just personal taste.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work shoulder-to-shoulder with engineering, art, production, and QA. Most of the job is communication—writing designs plainly, speccing acceptance criteria clearly, and aligning on scope, readability, and priorities.
  • Rapid Prototyping: Move quickly from idea to playable concept. Rough things up, get them in front of people, and let feedback and player data dictate what stays. Vagueness slows momentum; everything should have clear acceptance criteria.
  • Production Alignment: Size work honestly with production, flag risks upfront, and surface scope, time, or fun-factor blockers before they become issues.
  • Data-Driven Iteration: Read the data and listen to the players. Watch how people actually play, dive into retention metrics, and use those insights to sharpen your next iteration.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship: Back your team by mentoring junior designers, explaining the rationale behind your design decisions, celebrating shared wins, and protecting an ego-free, can-do studio culture.

What We Are Looking For

While none of these qualifications are rigid requirements, strong candidates typically bring most of them. If you miss a couple but excel elsewhere, we encourage you to apply:

  • At least one year of professional game design experience, serious solo projects, or a mix of both.
  • Hands-on Roblox design experience, or comparable game development background spanning systems, levels, progression, or economies.
  • A shipped project or a portfolio demonstrating how you make a game fun, with clear breakdowns of your specific design contributions.
  • An instinct for when something is off, paired with the persistence to keep tuning until it feels right.
  • Comfort moving dynamically between systems, levels, UX, and live content.
  • The ability to translate a fuzzy idea into a clear, buildable spec that art and engineering can execute.
  • Strong self-direction and comfort taking complete ownership of outcomes.
  • Clear, professional written and spoken communication skills in English.
  • A genuine passion for playing and creating games.

Nice-to-Haves

While not required to apply, any of the following will strengthen your application:

  • Something you designed and shipped yourself: a Roblox place, an indie build, or a game-jam entry.
  • Experience keeping a live Roblox experience running, tuned, and updated over time.
  • A strong read on what Roblox players want and how the community functions.
  • Comfort with economy design, progression math, and analyzing retention or monetization metrics.
  • Familiarity prototyping in Luau or scripting your own designs.
  • Prior experience working in remote, self-managing teams.
  • Additional skills in UI/UX, art, writing, VFX, or level building.
