Digital Domain Productions 3.0, Inc., a global leader in the visual effects industry, is seeking a talented and collaborative Crowd Artist to join our Software Department. In this role, you will be at the forefront of creating the sprawling, lifelike populations that breathe energy into modern cinema and high-end commercials.
Working under the guidance of the Crowd Supervisor, you will leverage industry-standard tools and internal pipelines to simulate everything from massive armies and bustling city streets to intricate flocking behaviors. Salary & Compensation Table
Digital Domain provides a competitive hourly rate based on regional market standards, internal equity, and individual expertise.
- Industry Experience: Minimum 3+ years in Feature Film and/or Commercial productions
- Primary Tool Expertise: Advanced knowledge of Houdini, Massive, or Maya
- Project Location Eligibility: California (USA), British Columbia (Canada), or Quebec (Canada)
- Education: Degree in Arts or equivalent professional experience
- Technical Skills: Strong pipeline understanding Effective communication skills
Detailed Responsibilities: Crafting Digital Life
The Crowd Artist is responsible for the technical and artistic execution of simulated agents within a high-end production pipeline.
1. Technical Execution & Simulation
- Software Mastery: Utilize Houdini and other tools for editing, cycle database management, and cycle blending efficiency.
- Optimization: Implement terrain optimizations and assist in plug-in development to accomplish specific effects.
- Technical Setup: Set up shots and troubleshoot issues on the artist/agent level.
- Data Delivery: Export QC’d (Quality Controlled) data to lighting and rendering departments.
2. Artistic Quality & Collaboration
- Look Development: Produce look tests based on provided reference materials and feedback.
- Pipeline Integration: Partner closely with Animation, Lighting, and Compositing to ensure effects work smoothly within the show pipeline.
- Deadline Management: Adhere to the show structure and production deadlines to complete all tasks.
- Collaborative Mindset: Work effectively within a highly collaborative and iterative environment.
Qualifications: Skills & Experience Required
Digital Domain is seeking an Crowd artist with a strong technical foundation and a proven track record in photo-real visual effects.
Professional Experience:
- Industry Tenure: 3+ years of experience as a Crowds or FX Artist creating photo-real effects elements for feature films and commercials.
- Software Expertise: Expert experience working in Houdini, Massive, and/or Maya is required.
- Pipeline Knowledge: A firm understanding of professional production pipelines.
- Communication: Requires strong technical and communication skills within a show structure.
Education & Technical Skills:
- Academic Background: Degree in Animation, Arts, Fine Arts, or equivalent production experience.
- Technical Plus: A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics is considered a plus.
- Scripting: Experience with Python and/or C++ scripting in a production environment is a plus.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Environment: This role is performed in an office working environment.
- Flexibility: While based on normal hours, this role requires extra hours pending production needs.
- Physicality: General physical demands include walking, bending, and sitting.
