The Job Role as Senior Paint / Prep Artist
As a Senior Paint / Prep Artist, you will be responsible for preparing live-action plates and removing unwanted elements while preserving the natural photographic characteristics of the original footage.
Your work may involve removing wires, rigs, markers, crew members, reflections, production equipment and other unwanted elements. You may also be required to reconstruct backgrounds, environments and surface details that have been obscured by objects or production elements.
The role requires a strong understanding of image reconstruction and the ability to make changes that remain completely invisible in the final shot. You should be comfortable working with both straightforward cleanup and complex frame-by-frame paint tasks where careful attention to detail is required.
You will work closely with Supervisors, Leads and other VFX artists while maintaining clean, organised and production-ready scripts.
Key Responsibilities
You will perform a wide range of professional Paint / Prep tasks, including the removal of wires, rigs, markers, production equipment, crew members, reflections and unwanted objects from live-action plates.
You will create clean plates and reconstruct obscured backgrounds and environments while maintaining the original texture, lighting and photographic characteristics of the footage. This may involve frame-by-frame paint, patching, tracked cleanup and the reconstruction of complex foreground or background areas.
You will use point, planar and camera tracking techniques to support efficient cleanup workflows and rebuild texture and detail across moving surfaces. Particular attention must be given to maintaining consistency across moving-camera shots and long frame ranges.
Your work should preserve grain, sharpness, motion blur, perspective, surface detail and overall photographic consistency. You will prepare completed plates for downstream compositing and ensure that scripts remain clean, organised and easy to review.
You will also respond efficiently to Supervisor and client feedback and deliver production-ready shots within agreed deadlines.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have 6+ years of professional Paint / Prep experience and strong production-level knowledge of Foundry Nuke.
You should have extensive experience with professional paint, cleanup and image-reconstruction workflows and be comfortable handling technically challenging shots independently.
A strong understanding of tracking and image reconstruction is essential, along with a good knowledge of grain, image texture, photography and lens characteristics. You should be able to reconstruct backgrounds convincingly while maintaining continuity across the shot.
Experience with Silhouette will be considered an advantage, particularly for artists who have worked across both paint/prep and roto-related workflows.
The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving ability and the ability to consistently meet professional VFX production deadlines.
Previous experience working on feature films or high-end episodic VFX projects is highly desirable.
Preferred Experience
Experience with wire and rig removal, marker removal, beauty work, reflection removal and crew removal will be highly valued.
Additional experience creating complex clean plates, working on moving-camera shots and reconstructing heavily occluded backgrounds will be beneficial. Experience with projection-based cleanup and long-duration shots is also an advantage.
Artists who have worked on creature and character preparation, large-format footage or high-resolution production material are encouraged to highlight this experience in their applications.
Image Reconstruction & Quality
Senior Paint / Prep Artists must understand that professional cleanup is about much more than simply removing an unwanted object.
Every modification should maintain the visual characteristics of the original plate. This includes preserving lighting, texture, grain, perspective, motion blur, lens characteristics, surface detail and natural photographic imperfections.
When reconstructing an area of a frame, you should be able to analyse surrounding information and create believable replacement detail that matches the original environment.
The final result should appear as though the unwanted element was never present.
This requires careful observation, technical precision and a strong understanding of how photographic images are captured and processed.
Production Environment
The role will involve feature-film and cinematic VFX projects within a professional remote production environment. Artists may work on individual shots or larger sequences where consistency across multiple frames is essential.
The position is offered on a freelance and project-based basis, with the possibility of ongoing opportunities for artists who consistently deliver high-quality work and meet production requirements.
You should be comfortable working within an established VFX pipeline and understand how Paint / Prep work supports downstream compositing and other departments.
Collaboration & Production
Although this is a remote position, strong communication and reliability are essential. You will collaborate with VFX Supervisors, Leads, Production and other artists throughout the project.
You should communicate clearly about shot progress, raise potential technical or creative issues early and respond professionally to feedback. You will also be expected to manage your workload effectively and deliver assigned shots according to agreed schedules.
Scripts and project files should remain clean, organised and production-ready so that they can be reviewed or continued by other members of the team when necessary.
What We Look For
Cinetism Inc. values quality, precision, consistency and invisible visual effects.
The ideal Senior Paint / Prep Artist understands that the best cleanup work is work that the audience never notices. Whether removing a wire, reconstructing a background or fixing a complex reflection, the final image should retain the natural appearance of the original photography.
We value artists who can work independently, solve difficult reconstruction problems and maintain consistent quality throughout long and technically demanding shots.
Strong communication, production discipline and the ability to respond efficiently to feedback are equally important.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit an updated Resume / CV and professional Paint / Prep Showreel demonstrating their strongest work.
Your application should include a clear breakdown of your contribution to the reel, particularly for complex cleanup, reconstruction, wire removal, rig removal, clean-plate creation and other technically demanding shots.
Please include your years of professional experience, software proficiency, current location, time zone, availability and expected daily or weekly freelance rate.
Your showreel should clearly demonstrate your ability to perform professional paint and prep work while preserving the photographic quality of the original footage.
Please ensure that your showreel link is directly accessible and clearly identifies your individual contribution to collaborative projects.
