Bonfire Studios – Orange County, CA (Hybrid)

At Bonfire Studios, we are a fellowship of experienced and ambitious developers dedicated to a singular mission: creating games that foster a deep sense of community and belonging. We are currently forging our first original IP: Arkheron. Set in a surreal dark fantasy universe, Arkheron is a fast-paced, competitive PvP experience where 15 teams of three battle to ascend a mysterious Tower.

We are looking for a Senior/Principal Environment Artist with the technical grit and artistic soul to transform surreal concepts into high-fidelity, AAA landscapes. In this role, you aren’t just an asset creator; you are a primary architect of a new world, responsible for elevating the visual language of our studio and crafting the very ground our players will fight upon.

Company Overview: The Bonfire Studios Philosophy

Bonfire studio is built on the belief that great games begin with people who dare to dream big. We operate as a tight-knit, independent group where decisions are driven by the team, not by external boards or investors. Our culture is defined by transparency, shared ownership, and a total lack of ego.

We play Arkheron daily. This grounded approach ensures that if the game isn’t more fun today than it was yesterday, we have the autonomy to fix it immediately. We don’t chase trends; we listen to the game by playing it. At Bonfire, you will find a “small team, big impact” environment where your craftsmanship visibly shapes the soul of our studio.

Role Overview as Environment Artist

As a Senior or Principal Environment Artist, you will be tasked with bringing the haunting and extraordinary realm of the Tower to life. This is a holistic world-building role. You will translate established concepts into immersive 3D environments where every vista serves the narrative and every layout is purpose-built for high-stakes competitive gameplay.

You will own the environment pipeline end-to-end—from initial blockouts and architectural kits to final in-engine implementation and set dressing. We are looking for an artist who thrives in the “surreal dark fantasy” aesthetic and has the technical maturity to balance artistic fidelity with the performance requirements of a competitive PvP title.

Key Responsibilities as Environment Artist

1. End-to-End World Building

  • Create high-quality in-game environment art including complex architecture, PBR materials, props, and expansive vistas.

  • Develop fully realized architectural kits that are visually cohesive, modular, and performant for Level Design.

  • Take ownership of environment assets from the concept phase through to final polish and engine integration.

2. Cross-Disciplinary Partnership

  • Partner closely with Level Design, Lighting, Engineering, and Audio to ensure environments support gameplay flow, navigation, and readability.

  • Balance artistic goals with technical constraints, making intelligent tradeoffs that prioritize the player experience without sacrificing visual impact.

  • Collaborate with downstream departments to follow environmental work through the entire production pipeline.

3. Artistic Leadership & Research

  • Conduct deep research and gather references to push the authenticity and cohesion of the Arkheron IP.

  • Contribute to the visual identity of a new IP, providing ideas early and often to help shape the world’s tone.

  • Operate with a high degree of autonomy, pushing work forward within a small, evolving team without the need for rigid corporate structure.

Requirements & Qualifications

Professional Experience

  • AAA Track Record: Significant experience creating AAA-quality environment art, ideally with at least one shipped major title.

  • Artistic Vision: A sharp eye for organic forms, complex architecture, materials, color theory, and spatial storytelling.

  • Product-First Thinking: You care deeply about how an environment affects the player’s movement, strategy, and emotional state.

Technical Mastery

  • Industry Tools: Proficient in Maya (or equivalent), ZBrush, Photoshop, and Substance Suite.

  • Engine Expertise: Deep understanding of modern real-time engines, including lighting, PBR workflows, UV optimization, and draw-call management.

  • Autonomy: Comfortable navigating ambiguity and taking initiative in a startup-style environment.

Leadership & Cultural Expectations

This role is for a “player-developer” who wants to wear multiple hats. You should apply if:

  • You value trust and openness and enjoy learning from diverse perspectives.

  • You possess a growth mindset and are constantly refining your craft.

  • You prefer holistic ownership over narrow specialization.

  • You are excited to contribute beyond asset creation to help build a healthy studio culture.

Benefits and Perks

Bonfire Studios offers a compensation package that reflects our commitment to our people:

  • Competitive Salary: A base range of $174,800 – $221,817, though we focus on your potential impact over mere years on a resume.

  • Equity: Every teammate receives an equity stake in the studio.

  • Full Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Extra Perks: Strategic perks designed to improve both work and life balance, including hybrid flexibility.

  • Independence: Work in a studio where the developers make the calls.
