Role Overview

The Environment Artist is responsible for the aesthetic and technical realization of our game worlds. You will work directly with our Art Director to define and implement an outstanding visual “look” for our environments. This role requires a versatile artist capable of executing multiple art styles, ranging from hyper-realism to stylized aesthetics. You must be equally adept at creating assets from concepts and interpreting design intentions when reference material is unavailable.

Key Responsibilities

1. World Building & Look Development

  • Creative Vision: Work closely with the Art Director and team to establish an outstanding look for our environments.
  • Stylistic Versatility: Be capable of executing multiple art styles as required by project needs.
  • Reference Interpretation: Demonstrate the ability to work from photo reference or concept art, as well as the ability to interpret design intention when a concept is unavailable.

2. Technical Execution & Asset Creation

  • Advanced Texturing: Demonstrate expertise in texturing using both procedurally generated and hand-painted techniques within a PBR workflow.
  • Optimization Mastery: Maintain a strong understanding of modularity and the use of trim sheets for optimal level building.
  • Engine Integration: Possess experience with real-time engines and have spent a considerable amount of time “in-editor”.

3. Collaborative Production

  • Project Goals: Communicate and collaborate effectively with team members, production, and management to ensure that project goals are defined and met on time.
  • Atmospheric Systems: Apply a basic understanding of shaders, material creation, lighting, and environmental effects.

Qualifications & Technical Skills

Professional Requirements

  • Artistic Foundations: Knowledge of traditional art principles and theory of function, form, shape, proportions, and color.
  • Technical Problem-Solving: High proficiency in navigating complex 3D pipelines.

Technical Proficiencies

  • Modeling Tools: High level of proficiency in Maya or 3ds Max, and ZBrush.
  • Texturing Suite: Mastery of Substance Painter.
  • Material Design: Specialized understanding of shaders, material creation, and lighting.
  • Real-Time Engines: Significant experience working within industry-standard game engines “in-editor”.
