About the Job Role
As a Junior Animator, you will contribute to the animation production by creating character and shot animation based on approved storyboards, animatics and direction from the Director.
You will be involved in different stages of the animation process, beginning with understanding the requirements of a shot and establishing strong poses and timing during the blocking stage. You will then refine the animation by improving movement, spacing, weight, acting and performance before taking the shot through to final polish. The role provides an opportunity to work within a structured Blender production pipeline and gain valuable experience working on a professional animation project.
You should be comfortable working from reference material, understanding the intent of a shot and translating story and performance requirements into effective animation.
Key Responsibilities as Junior Animator
You will create animation sequences based on storyboards and animatics, following the creative direction and instructions provided by the Director and animation team.
Your responsibilities will include blocking, refining and polishing animation through to final delivery. You will be expected to complete assigned shots within the established production schedule while maintaining the required quality, visual style and continuity of the project.
You will work on character poses, movement, acting, lip sync and other animation requirements depending on the needs of each shot. You should pay close attention to timing, spacing, weight, silhouette and performance to ensure that animation communicates the intended story and emotion.
You will also address revisions and incorporate feedback from Directors, Leads and Supervisors. When problems arise, you will be expected to identify and communicate creative or technical issues clearly so that they can be resolved efficiently.
Animation Workflow
The successful candidate should be comfortable working through the different stages of a typical animation workflow.
This may include reviewing the storyboard and animatic, understanding the shot requirements, establishing key poses, blocking the major movements, refining timing and spacing, adding secondary motion and polishing the final performance.
You should understand that animation is an iterative process. Shots may go through multiple rounds of review and revision, and you should be comfortable making changes based on feedback while maintaining the creative intent of the project.
A strong understanding of character posing, body mechanics, acting and performance will help you contribute effectively to the production.
Required Qualifications as Junior Animator
Candidates should have at least 1 year of professional experience in the animation or film industry, although equivalent experience through relevant projects may also be considered.
A degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Animation or a related discipline will be considered an asset, but practical experience and a strong animation portfolio are equally important.
You should have experience with 3D animation software, with Blender strongly preferred, and demonstrate a solid understanding of fundamental animation principles.
Knowledge of character posing, animation, lip sync and camera composition is important for this role. You should understand how poses, timing, expressions and camera framing work together to communicate a character’s actions and emotions.
Skills & Attributes
The ideal candidate will have a creative mindset and a genuine interest in animation. You should be willing to contribute ideas while also understanding how to work within the creative direction and visual requirements established for the project.
The ability to take direction and receive feedback positively is essential. You should be comfortable working collaboratively with Directors, Leads and fellow artists and be willing to make revisions when required.
Good communication and organisational skills are also important. You should be able to manage assigned tasks, keep track of deadlines and communicate any production challenges before they affect delivery.
The ability to adapt to different animation styles and embrace creative or technical changes will be highly valued.
Collaboration & Production
Animation is a collaborative discipline, and you will work closely with other members of the production team throughout the project.
You will participate in production meetings, reviews and discussions and may be encouraged to contribute creative ideas that can improve shots, performances or workflows.
A positive and professional attitude is expected at all stages of production. You should be willing to support your colleagues, accept constructive feedback and contribute to a productive team environment.
You will also be expected to communicate clearly when you encounter creative, technical or scheduling issues.
Production Schedule & Deadlines
Meeting production deadlines is an important part of the role. You will be responsible for completing assigned shots within the agreed schedule while maintaining the expected level of quality.
You should be able to organise your workload effectively and prioritise tasks based on production requirements. When a shot requires additional time or presents an unexpected challenge, you should communicate this to the appropriate team member as early as possible.
The ability to balance quality, efficiency and production deadlines will be an important part of your success in this position.
Learning & Development
We encourage artists to continue developing their skills and staying informed about new animation techniques, tools and technologies.
As part of the role, you will have the opportunity to gain experience within a professional Blender-based production environment and further develop your understanding of character animation and production workflows.
You should have a willingness to learn, experiment and improve your animation skills throughout the project.
Who Should Apply?
This position is suited to a Junior Animator with a strong foundation in 3D animation who is looking to build professional production experience. Your portfolio or showreel should demonstrate your strongest animation work and, where possible, include examples of character acting, body mechanics, posing, lip sync, timing, weight and performance. We are interested in artists who demonstrate strong animation fundamentals, creativity, adaptability and a willingness to learn. Whether your experience comes from professional production, formal animation education, personal projects or a combination of these, your showreel should clearly demonstrate your current animation abilities.
