Industrial Light & Magic (ILM Mumbai), a premier division of The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm, is seeking an experienced and visionary Environment Supervisor for our Mumbai, India studio.
In this pivotal leadership role, your primary responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Generalist (Environments) team, ensuring that all digital environments are crafted flawlessly to match the unique artistic designs and visual style of the production. Achieving this requires close cross-departmental collaboration, partnering extensively with Assets, Animation, and Lighting Supervisors, as well as VFX Supervisors, to maintain absolute creative and technical cohesion.
Generalists (Environments) at ILM possess the exceptional capability to create photo-real environments and landscapes, exhibiting a profound foundation in photo-realistic, traditional, and digital art skills with a specialized emphasis on natural and fantastical landscapes.
You will work fluidly with live-action footage, digital still photography, rendered computer graphic elements, and digital paint to construct comprehensive environments that integrate seamlessly into high-end feature films. Whether you are guiding creative brainstorming sessions, evaluating technical feasibility, or mentoring junior artists, you will champion an environment of innovation, rigorous standards, and positive team morale.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities as Environment Supervisor
Team Leadership & Oversight: Supervise the Generalist (Environments) team closely to ensure they consistently deliver the expected and desired visual effects for the assigned show.
Technical Feasibility & Collaboration: Consult directly with CG and VFX Supervisors regarding the technical feasibility of design elements, offering production-friendly solutions that preserve the overarching artistic vision of the show.
Shot Review & Approval: Regularly review the work of individual artists, carefully approving shots and models before final submission to the director.
Staffing & Recruitment: Actively participate in the recruiting, interviewing, and staffing processes for the Generalist team, assessing prospective candidates and collaborating with production management on hiring decisions.
Talent Development & Mentorship: Partner with production management to guide artists’ overall professional development, delivering constructive performance feedback, resolving management issues, and mentoring apprentice and junior artists on their daily shots.
Communication & Meetings: Attend all relevant production and creative meetings to promote transparent communication channels across the entire production team.
Tool Development & Testing: Work alongside sequence leads to test out cutting-edge tools and techniques before rolling them out to shot artists. Handle moderately complex hard-body and soft-body simulations, lighting, and rendering for compositing.
Content Creation & Execution: Responsible for creating original 2D and 3D content that may comprise part or all of a given environment, utilizing artistic and technical skills across all aspects of CG images.
Aesthetic Problem-Solving: Participate as an active team member in determining diverse aesthetic solutions, providing valuable feedback during regular daily reviews.
Technical Skills & Competencies as Environment Supervisor
- Look Development & Texturing: Advanced texture competence, including the ability to create 2D maps and set up basic shaders for sophisticated look development.
- Lighting Physics: Solid understanding of the physics of light, how light interacts with camera parameters, and how to build convincing lighting setups inside complex shaders (such as hard-surface materials) that render efficiently.
- Specialist Tool Proficiency: Working knowledge of industry-standard specialist plugins and tools, including Multiscatter and Speedtree. Scripting fluency to run and modify scripts for specific shot needs.
- Core CG Mastery: Proven proficiency across multiple CG disciplines, including modeling, texturing, shading, lighting, look development, and compositing.
- Matte Painting & 2.5D/3D Techniques: Comprehensive knowledge of matte painting techniques combined with the ability to apply 2.5D and 3D methodologies for effective problem-solving.
- Software Fluency: Deep fluency in Houdini, 3ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, Nuke, and Solaris, with a demonstrated capacity to learn new software rapidly.
- Bidding & Estimation: Experience in the accurate bidding and resource estimation for all aspects of environment work required.
Education and Experience
- Professional Experience: 10+ years of relevant professional experience working in a leadership role on high-end VFX film projects or CG animated productions.
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in computer graphics, fine arts, design, photography, or a related field, OR an equivalent combination of professional education and hands-on experience.
- Global Collaboration: Proven experience working successfully across different studios, geographic locations, and time zones.
- Portfolio Requirement: A comprehensive demo reel and/or professional portfolio showcasing leadership and environment execution is strictly required.
